REDEFINING GEOGRAPHY

FI WI ROAD FAIR 2024:

This September the third annual Fi Wi Road Fair returns for a collaborative redefining of Geography’s violent past, contentious present, and urgent future.

Once again designed and delivered by the 2024 Fi Wi Road Cohort, the space will be an acknowledgement of the many diverse meanings of Geography. We invite you to explore those definitions which resonate most with us, recognising Geography as VIOLENT, RESISTANT, EVERYWHERE & URGENT

In Person

Joining us for the in person event?

The fair will be held at the University of Glasgow, on Monday 16th September 2024 from 11.30AM - 3.30PM. The exact location of the event will be released to our attendees closer to the date.

Registration is now open, and you are welcome to register your interest in attending below. Our in person event is focussed on engaging with early career Black heritage researchers and students, and therefore ticket allocation will prioritise registrants who fall within this category. We thank you for your understanding of the importance of providing spaces for people who are often marginalised within research spaces.

How to find us

Exact details of the location for the Fair will be released to registrants for the in-person event at a later date. Our in-person space is fully wheelchair-accessible, however, if you have any accessibility concerns or additional requirements please flag this in your registration form.

The Fi Wi Road Fair is open for all to attend online. Live streams of our in-person panel events will also be available on this website, so be sure to check back on the day. Keep up to date with events on the day via our Twitter or Instagram.

  • The online fair will be hosted on this website in the lead up to in-person event. Continue checking back or follow us on our social media to get updates as new contributions are shared.

    The in-person Fair will be held from 11.30AM - 3.30PM on Monday 16th September 2024 in Glasgow, Scotland. Our in-person event is aimed at engaging with Black heritage researchers and students. We thank you for your understanding of the importance of providing safe spaces for people who are often marginalised or isolated within research spaces.

  • The Fi Wi Road Fair is an online and in person fair which takes place every year as the culmination of the Fi Wi Road Internship. This year's fair ‘Redefining Geography’ is the creative vision of our ‘Fi Wi Road (Our Road): Freeing Up Futures for Black British Geographers’ 2024 interns.

  • The Fair has emerged from the work of the Fi Wi Road Internship Cohort of 2024. The interns are leading it alongside the Fi Wi Road Internship Co-Ordinators. These team members are responsible for moderating both the in person and online Fair.

  • We’re looking to showcase contributions from people all around the world as part of our online, open-access fair. We welcome contributions of all kinds and mediums from Black heritage students, academics, or independent researchers regardless of their discipline or career stage. Your contribution can be in any language of your choice.

    You can navigate to the ‘Call for Contributions page’ to make a submission for the 2024 Fair. Responses to this call will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we aim to respond to you within 5 working days. Submissions will be accepted up until the 13th September 2024

  • If you have a query or concern about the accessibility of the online Fair platform we would appreciate you highlighting this to us.

    The Fair will be held at the University of Glasgow, and all of the event spaces will be wheelchair accessible.

    The in-person Fair will involve crowds, as well as music and other stimulants. While we have systems in place to manage these, we must highlight that this may be overwhelming for those with additional sensory considerations. If attending in person, members of the team will be able to direct you towards a quiet place on campus if necessary.

  • You can explore the contributions to the online archive once we release the first batch of submissions. The in person programme of panel sessions will be released via our website and on social media closer to the date of the event.

  • The Fi Wi Road internship is a 3 month Summer internship aimed at Black heritage undergraduates studying Geography or the Geosciences. Through group sessions, one-to-one mentoring, skills workshops, and hands-on research experience, the ‘Fi Wi Road’ internship supports Black students in building networks, voice and experience, encouraging them to stay within a discipline in which black geographers are consistently under-represented, and often brutally marginalised and squeezed out.
